What is an MRI? (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
An MRI is an advanced medical imaging technique using a magnetic field and radio waves instead of x-ray to display parts of the body. MRI’s provide an excellent way to diagnose disorders of the brain or nervous system, spine, skeleton, chest, abdomen, pelvis and blood vessels. It can also detect internal injuries and problems with tendons, cartilage, ligaments and bone marrow.
Is an MRI safe?
Yes, MRI is safe. We will interview you over the phone and in person prior to your exam. It is important for you to answer our safety questions accurately.
MRI is not recommended if you have the following:
- Pacemaker or cardiac defibrillator
- Some types of aneurysm clips
- Cochlear (ear) implants
- Implanted Nerve Stimulators
- Other medical implants that are metallic, use batteries or wires
If you have any of the implants listed above, make sure to let your physician and the MRI staff know. We will determine if your device can be scanned safely.
